BUILDING PERMIT AND LAND USE
The Town of Gordon falls under county-wide zoning. When you plan to build, move, or alter any structure; change the use of an existing structure; grade or fill; or modify land uses, you need to contact the Douglas County Planning and Zoning Department for applicable permits required by county ordinance. After a land use permit is issued by Douglas County you then need to contact the town Clerk-Treasurer and obtain a town Building Permit.
TOWN BUILDING PERMIT
The town has the responsibility in Wisconsin to enforce the state’s Uniform Dwelling Code (UDC). You must get a Building Permit from the town before starting any construction project, including new buildings, additions, or significant remodeling.
Refer to the town Building Information Permit Ordinance for specific requirements.
Building Information Permit Ordinance is pending adoption by the Town Board.
GORDON SANITARY DISTRICT #1 PERMIT
The owner of any property in the boundaries of the Gordon Sanitary District #1 is required to obtain a sewer permit from the Gordon Sanitary District #1 Commission for hookup and connection to the sewer system. The maintenance and use of septic tanks and other private onsite waste treatment systems is prohibited.
ACREAGE REQUIRED TO BUILD
The number of acres required to build depends on the zoning district your parcel is in. Check with Douglas County to find the zoning district assigned to your parcel. Please note: the zoning district is not the same as the class code that shows on your real estate tax bill. See the County website link for setback and dimensional requirements.

LAND USE PERMITS
The Douglas County Zoning Ordinance includes a map of the county identifying the zoning districts. Each zoning district has a number of allowed uses and uses allowed with a conditional use permit. The primary difference is that a land use permit is approved by the Zoning Administrator and does not require approval by the Zoning Committee. A conditional use permit does require review and recommendation of the Town Board, and a public hearing and approval by the Zoning Committee.
